Our Story
About JAM
Rooted in Melville — Johannesburg's bohemian heartbeat, ranked among the world's top creative neighbourhoods — JAM evolved from 27 Boxes into a cultural movement celebrating the creative spirit of Africa's most dynamic city.
Our Mission
Empowering Johannesburg's creative economy
Born from 27 Boxes — a pioneering shipping container development at 76a 4th Avenue, Melville — JAM transformed a disused park into a thriving creative hub in one of Johannesburg's most beloved bohemian suburbs. Nestled near the University of Johannesburg and Wits, Melville has long been a magnet for writers, artists, and academics drawn to its eclectic 7th Street scene of bookstores, cafes and independent culture.
Inspired by developments like Box Park in London's Shoreditch, JAM is Johannesburg's quirky, community-powered alternative to the mega-mall — geared towards starter entrepreneurs where the person behind the counter is often the very person who handmade what you're buying.

Featured Initiative
JAM × Joburg Child Welfare
The Johannesburg Artist Market has partnered with Joburg Child Welfare (JCW) to launch a landmark social impact initiative — providing dedicated open spaces and commercial areas for community-driven donations, fundraising, and awareness activities.
Launched on 18 July 2025 as part of Mandela Day commemorations, this initiative turns a once-off day of giving into a year of care. Families are encouraged to donate gently used clothes, toys, and household items, drop off essentials like nappies and school supplies, and purchase donated goods to support JCW's work.
"Thanks to the Johannesburg Artist Market, we now have a permanent space where donations can be received, exchanged, and sold to enable long-term fundraising and community engagement efforts to support our work."
